In the first half

Germany needed a victory, so they just waited for the opening whistle to attack. The European representative deployed the ball quickly and only needed 10 minutes to hit the Costa Rica net. The red shirt team arranged a large defense but still let Serge Gnabry head in, knocking out Keylor Navas.

The early opening goal did not help Germany play explosively. The German team completely controls the midfield area with a possession rate of up to 70%. However, they can only approach the opponent's goal with long shots. The efforts of Joshua Kimmich and Leroy Sane were not enough.

Germany attacked impotently. They even narrowly conceded a goal in the last minutes of the first half after the handling of Rudiger and Sule. In the 42nd minute, Manuel Neuer helped the European representative escape defeat before Keysher Spence's close-range shot.

In the second half

At the beginning of the second half, bad news came to "Tank", when Japan surprisingly won over Spain with a score of 2-1. At this time, Spain was pushed down to 2nd and became a direct competitor to Germany (with 4 points). Accordingly, Germany will have to score up to 8 goals against Costa Rica to overcome the opponent in terms of difference.

The bad news seemed to distract the German team. Coach Hansi Flick's team defended superficially and conceded a goal after a simple offensive situation. Neuer parried the first close-range header but was powerless as Yeltsin Tejeda slams into the rock from close range. The score was leveled 1-1 for Costa Rica, meaning Germany was pushed to the bottom of the table with 2 points.

Germany had no choice but to go all out to attack. However, two consecutive situations of Musiala's shot hitting the column in the 61st and 67th minutes signaled a nightmare for the fans of the team from Europe. In the 70th minute, Juan Pablo Vargas took advantage of a messy ball in front of goal to knock Neuer down, making it 2-1.

Efforts to attack in the last few minutes brought Germany to 3 goals in the 73rd, 85th and 90th minutes, thanks to Kai Havertz and Fullkrug's close-range shots.

Germany has the necessary condition of a 4-2 victory over Costa Rica to reclaim the 3rd place, but there is no sufficient condition, that is, Spain must equalize before Japan. On the Khalifa field, "La Roja" was completely deadlocked and accepted a 1-2 defeat against "Blue Samurai".

This result caused Germany to be eliminated from the group stage in two consecutive World Cups. Germany has 4 points, equal to Spain but only ranked 3rd due to inferiority in goal difference - defeat (+1 vs +6).

Japan and Spain are the two representatives to continue in Group E. In the round of 16, Japan will meet Croatia, while Spain will meet Morocco.
